UN Extends Condolences and Offers Assistance Following Great Sumatra Floods

PBB Headquarters: The United Nations (UN) has expressed its condolences over the loss of life caused by the recent floods and landslides that have struck Indonesia and several other Southeast Asian nations.
During a press conference on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, local time, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric delivered a statement from Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regarding the severe situation.
“Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is deeply saddened by the loss of life caused by the severe floods and landslides in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia,” Dujarric said, as quoted by Antara.
He added that the UN Secretary-General stands in solidarity with the victims and is ready to support humanitarian efforts in the affected countries.
“The Secretary-General expresses his profound condolences to the victims and expresses solidarity with all those affected by the massive floods,” he said.
Dujarric confirmed that the UN is maintaining close communication with the authorities in the affected countries and stands ready to assist with rescue and disaster response operations.
“The UN is communicating closely with the authorities in those countries and is, of course, always ready to support rescue and disaster response operations,” he said.
As of Tuesday, December 2, Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded that the death toll from the floods and landslides in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh reached 753 people, while the number of missing victims rose to 551 people.
Separately, Sri Lanka's disaster management center reported 410 fatalities and 336 missing victims.
In Thailand, Health Minister Pattana Promphat confirmed only 140 fatalities, denying rumors of thousands of deaths in the south, and Malaysia's national disaster command center reported three fatalities from natural disasters in that country. ***
