Indonesia–Australia Renew MoU on Education and Research

KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesia and Australia are set to significantly enhance their educational relationship following the renewal of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on bilateral cooperation. The updated agreement was signed by Australian Minister for Education, Jason Clare MP, and Indonesian Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto.

"Education is a key pillar of the Australia-Indonesia partnership. This updated MoU highlights the priorities of both governments to encourage collaboration in higher education and research," said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Rod Brazier, in a press release from the Australian Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday, November 27, 2025, as quoted by Antara.

The renewed MoU explicitly reaffirms both countries' commitment to deepen cooperation in higher education and research. This builds upon an already strong foundation.

In 2024, a total of 24,000 Indonesian students were enrolled in Australian educational institutions, cementing Australia’s status as a primary destination for Indonesian students seeking international education.

The collaboration is not limited to student mobility. The presence of Australian universities operating directly in Indonesia is expanding access to world-class education and research locally.

Three Australian universities, Monash University, Western Sydney University, and Deakin University (in partnership with Lancaster University of the UK) have successfully established campuses in Indonesia.

The Embassy noted that hundreds of existing academic and research partnerships between Australian and Indonesian institutions are currently driving innovation and building capacity in both countries.

Ambassador Brazier expressed optimism that the updated MoU, signed in November, will further strengthen bilateral ties and create new opportunities for collaboration in the academic and research sphere. ***
