Indonesia Pursues Eight Percent Growth and Zero Emissions

KBRN, Brazil: Senior Policy Analyst at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Axel Priambodo, has stated that Indonesia is pursuing its vision of achieving eight percent economic growth while remaining on track toward net-zero emissions by 2060. According to him, the country’s ambitious economic target will directly drive a significant increase in national energy demand.

He further conveyed the statement during the eighth-day session of the Indonesia Pavilion at the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, Monday (11/17/2025),

Axel said that such substantial economic expansion must be supported by a large and reliable supply of energy.

“With this substantial economic target growth comes a substantial demand growth as well. And for us to really meet the demand, comes also a substantial energy supply as well in the number,” Axel Priambodo conveyed.

Senior Policy Analyst explained that Indonesia can pursue its growth target in line with emission reduction efforts, noting the country’s considerable potential in the clean energy sector. He highlighted several key factors from the world’s largest nickel reserves to the steady rise of renewable energy investments, which together position Indonesia to emerge as a global hub for clean technology manufacturing.

He stated that,”So, Indonesia is blessed with so many resources from end-to-end clean energy value chains, starting from the upstream to the downstream. And we can see here that Indonesia can be a clean tech manufacturing hub.

However, he also explained that realizing this potential will require not only public funding but also large-scale international financing.

“Imagine, US$100 billion in 9 to 10 years, which means that in one year, we need roughly like almost US$10 billion invested into projects. And the message here is very clear, public finance alone is not enough. We need others to step in as well,” Axel stated.

The Analyst said that the government has established the National Energy Transition and Green Economy Task Force to align policies, fiscal instruments, and cross-institution project pipelines.

The task force is expected to strengthen coordinated implementation of the energy transition and ensure that various initiatives remain aligned with Indonesia’s broader green growth objectives. He also noted that these national efforts connect with international frameworks, including the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), which plays an important role in supporting Indonesia’s transition agenda.

Finally, Axel Priambodo stated that although it may seem simple, the implementation of the energy transition is highly dynamic. It can also make government leadership and trust among stakeholders crucial to executing and mobilizing the necessary financing.
