KBRN, Pyongyang: Minister for Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Sugiono, held an official visit to Pyongyang, North Korea from 10 to 11 October 2025, where he met Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Choe Son Hui. It was the minister’s first to DPRK in the last 12 years.
Both ministers discussed the long-standing friendship between Indonesia and the DPRK and explored ways to enhance cooperation in various sectors. The two sides also agreed to identify new and mutually beneficial areas of collaboration that reflect the shared commitment to peace and development.
The minister reaffirmed Indonesia’s readiness to support closer engagement between the DPRK and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
"Particularly through the DPRK’s active participation in ASEAN-led mechanisms such as the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF)," Indonesian MoFA stated in the statement on Saturday.
As part of efforts to strengthen bilateral ties, both Foreign Ministers signed the Renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of Bilateral Consultations, which serves as a framework for cooperation in political, socio-cultural, technical, and sports sectors.
This step underscores the enduring friendship and mutual respect that have characterized relations between the two nations for over six decades.
While in Pyongyang, Minister Sugiono also attended the commemorative event marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea, at the invitation of the DPRK Government.
Indonesia and the DPRK established diplomatic relations in the 1960s, founded on solidarity and mutual respect between their leaders and peoples. Minister Sugiono’s visit reaffirmed Indonesia’s continued commitment to fostering constructive engagement and cooperation with the DPRK.
