KBRN, Jakarta: Each year on March 22, World Water Day is observed to highlight the significance of freshwater and promote sustainable management of water resources. This observance aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, aiming to ensure water and sanitation access for all by 2030.

In 2025, the theme is 'Glacier Preservation,' emphasizing the crucial role glaciers play as natural freshwater reservoirs. Their meltwater supports drinking supplies, agriculture, industry, and healthy ecosystems.

However, glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates. Climate change-induced warming leads to glacier shrinkage, disrupting the water cycle and causing unpredictable and extreme conditions. This alteration affects billions, resulting in floods, droughts, landslides, sea-level rise, and ecosystem damage.

Researcher at Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Yus Budiyono, attributes glacier reduction to fossil fuel combustion. He suggests that Indonesians, distant from glaciers, can aid preservation by adopting non-combustion transportation methods.

"We need to use bikes. The government should develop bike and pedestrian paths to encourage non-combustion transportation. For commuting to schools or workplaces, opt for public transportation over motorcycles or cars," Budiyono said, during VOI Talk, Friday (21/3/2025).

Additionally, planting trees is vital for water conservation, as it enhances air quality and groundwater levels. Trees are essential in maintaining a healthy water cycle and promoting sustainable water use. Therefore, one of the most effective and eco-friendly ways to conserve water is to plant trees.

Collective efforts to reduce fossil fuel consumption and engage in environmental conservation are crucial in addressing the global water crisis. Such actions are vital to achieving SDG 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
