KBRN, Jakarta: The Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) and the Japan Coast Guard will conduct joint exercises in the Jakarta Bay area.
This was marked by the arrival of the Japanese Coast Guard vessel Settsu, which docked at Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
The Bakamla Secretary General, Rear Adm. Samuel Kowaas, said these joint exercises will occur until January 26, 2026. He noted that the arrival of this ship represents the commitment to the global Coast Guard mission.
"That is to ensure maritime security and safety, as the sea is not only for our interests. Historically, the sea has always been considered a heritage of all humanity," Samuel told reporters on-site, as reported by rri.co.id on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
Samuel explained that the training itself involves simulations of facing sea disturbances and safety issues, such as crimes committed at open seas.
"We know numerous potential offenses are happening in the ocean, so conducting this drill alone isn't enough. However, this training aims not only to handle criminal breaches but also to perform rescue operations whenever assistance is needed," said Samuel.
Samuel mentioned that prior collaborations between Bakamla and the Japan Coast Guard existed for quite some time. Both entities engaged in various activities during their cooperative efforts, including exchanging personnel for educational purposes.
Bakamla hopes to strengthen maritime defense capabilities through this joint exercise and enhance the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Japan.
Meanwhile, Kanosue Hiroaki, Japan Coast Guard's Operation Vice Commandant, appreciated the long-standing collaboration with Bakamla.
"Our cooperation with Bakamla has been ongoing for quite some time, and the security of these waters is also a priority for our country. Therefore, we hope this relationship can deepen over time," said Kanosue. ***
