RRI.CO.ID, Bogor - Magnesium is increasingly promoted online for achieving better, deeper sleep quality. However, IPB University expert says magnesium should not be considered a sleep drug.
Lecturer at IPB University's Faculty of Medicine and Nutrition Dr. Yunita Aryani explained that magnesium regulates several sleep-related processes. “Magnesium helps regulate nerve activity, muscle relaxation, and sleep-wake rhythms,” Yunita said on the IPB University website on Tuesday, 29 September 2026.

Higher magnesium intake is associated with better sleep quality and shorter sleep onset latency. However, research has not established that magnesium directly improves sleep quality.
Magnesium helps stabilize nerve activity and reduce excessive glutamate-related stimulation. It also balances gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) activity, calcium, potassium, circadian rhythms, and melatonin pathways.
Difficulty sleeping does not automatically indicate magnesium deficiency, according to Yunita. Hyperarousal can keep the brain active despite physical fatigue, disrupting sleep mechanisms.
Sleep problems can also involve stress, anxiety, overthinking, and late-night device use. Irregular sleep schedules, bright rooms, caffeine, nicotine, hormones, illnesses, and medications may contribute.
Yunita said improving sleep requires more than relying on magnesium supplements. Regular exercise, consistent sleep schedules, nutritious foods, and comprehensive treatment should also be considered.
