RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Lempuyang (Zingiber zerumbet) is a medicinal rhizome widely used in Indonesia from the ginger family that has been traditionally used in herbal preparations. This aromatic plant contains zerumbone, sesquiterpenes, essential oils, and flavonoids that have attracted scientific interest because of their potential anti-inflammatory and digestive-related properties.

According to research published in the journal Phytochemistry, zerumbone is one of the most important bioactive compounds found in Zingiber zerumbet. This compound has been investigated for its interaction with inflammatory pathways and cellular processes.

One of the main research areas involving lempuyang is modulating inflammation. Laboratory studies suggest that zerumbone may influence inflammatory mediators, making it an interesting compound for natural product research.

Lempuyang has also been traditionally used to support digestive health. Its aromatic compounds are believed to help maintain gastrointestinal function and provide a warming sensation similar to other ginger-family plants.

Beyond traditional medicine, lempuyang has potential applications in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Essential oil components from the rhizome are being explored for antimicrobial and botanical formulation development.

Although lempuyang has a long history of traditional use, most evidence is limited to laboratory studies. Further clinical research is needed to establish therapeutic doses and long-term safety.
