RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Bengle (Zingiber montanum) is an Indonesian medicinal ingredient that is a close relative of ginger. It is traditionally used in herbal preparations. The rhizome contains essential oils, terpenoids, phenylbutanoids, and other secondary metabolites that have attracted research interest because of their potential biological activities.
According to studies published in the journal Phytochemistry, members of the Zingiber genus contain diverse aromatic compounds that contribute to their medicinal properties. Compounds from bengle have been investigated for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities.
Traditional communities have used bengle in herbal preparations associated with digestive comfort, body warmth, and general wellness. Its aromatic nature has made it a valued ingredient in traditional medicine systems.
Research has also focused on the essential oil components of bengle. Certain compounds have demonstrated antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies, supporting interest in natural product development.
The cosmetic and wellness industries are exploring ginger-family plants because their volatile compounds are valuable as essential oils, massage products, and botanical formulations.
Although bengle has a history of traditional use, scientific evidence remains mostly preclinical. Standardized extracts and clinical studies are needed to determine safe and effective applications.
