RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) is an aromatic plant widely recognized for its essential oil, particularly in respiratory and personal care products. The leaves contain 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), a volatile compound responsible for the characteristic fresh aroma and many biological activities studied in modern research.
According to a review published in the journal Molecules, eucalyptus essential oil contains bioactive compounds with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and decongestant properties. The researchers highlighted 1,8-cineole as the primary compound responsible for many of the oil’s biological effects.
One of the most widely studied applications of eucalyptus oil is respiratory relief. Products containing eucalyptus oil are commonly used in inhalation preparations because the aromatic compounds provide a cooling sensation and may help promote a sensation of clearer airways.
Eucalyptus has also been investigated for antimicrobial activity. Laboratory studies suggest that its essential oil components may inhibit certain microorganisms, supporting applications in hygiene products and natural formulations.
Beyond health applications, eucalyptus oil is widely used in aromatherapy and cosmetics. Its fresh fragrance makes it a common ingredient in balms, massage oils, soaps, and personal care products.
Although eucalyptus oil is popular for external use, concentrated oil should not be ingested without medical supervision. Excessive exposure may cause irritation or toxicity, especially in children and sensitive individuals.
