RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Cajuput (Melaleuca cajuputi) is one of Indonesia’s important essential oil plants, producing cajuput oil that has been traditionally used for respiratory comfort, massage, and personal care products. The oil contains 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), terpenes, and other volatile compounds responsible for its characteristic aroma.

A review published in the journal Molecules reported that essential oils rich in 1,8-cineole demonstrate antimicrobial and respiratory-related biological activities. These properties have supported the traditional use of cajuput oil.

One of the most recognized applications of cajuput oil is providing a warming sensation and supporting respiratory comfort. The aromatic compounds create a cooling and refreshing effect commonly used in balms, inhalants, and massage products.

Cajuput oil has also demonstrated antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies. This has encouraged its use in natural topical products and hygiene formulations.

The essential oil industry values Melaleuca cajuputi because it is a renewable botanical resource. Indonesia has developed cajuput plantations to support domestic and international essential oil markets.

Although commonly used externally, concentrated cajuput oil should not be applied excessively or should not be taken internally. Essential oils require appropriate dilution to reduce irritation risks.
