RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Water lily (Nymphaea pubescens) is an aquatic plant found in tropical regions, including Indonesia, that has been used traditionally in herbal practices. Its flowers, leaves, and rhizomes contain flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and phenolic compounds that have attracted attention in natural product research.
According to research published in the journal Phytotherapy Research, species from the Nymphaea genus contain various phytochemicals associated with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities. These compounds provide scientific interest in understanding traditional uses of water lilies.
Traditional medicine systems have used water lily preparations for various wellness purposes. Researchers continue to investigate how plant compounds may contribute to these traditional applications through laboratory studies.
One of the interesting aspects of Nymphaea species is their rich diversity of pigments and phenolic compounds. These natural compounds have potential applications as botanical ingredients and natural color sources.
The cosmetic and wellness industries are increasingly exploring aquatic plant extracts because of their unique phytochemical profiles. Water lily-derived ingredients may provide opportunities for soothing and aromatic skincare formulations.
Although promising, research on Nymphaea pubescens remains more limited compared with lotus (Nelumbo nucifera). Further scientific studies are required to establish safety, dosage, and specific health applications.
