RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Ciplukan (Physalis angulata) is a small wild plant that has gained renewed scientific attention because of its unique bioactive compounds. Once considered a common roadside plant, ciplukan contains withanolides, flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenolic compounds that have made it a subject of natural product research.

According to research published in the journal Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Physalis angulata contains withanolides, a group of steroidal lactones also found in other medicinal plants of the Solanaceae family. These compounds have been investigated for anti-inflammatory and immune-related activities.

One of the most interesting areas of ciplukan research is its potential role in immune regulation. Experimental studies suggest that certain compounds from the plant may influence inflammatory responses and cellular defense mechanisms.

Ciplukan fruit is also nutritionally valuable because it contains vitamins, minerals, and plant pigments. Its small golden berries have attracted interest as functional foods due to their unique composition.

The pharmaceutical industry continues to explore ciplukan-derived compounds because withanolides have demonstrated diverse biological activities in laboratory studies. Researchers are investigating their potential applications while continuing safety evaluations.

Although ciplukan has a long history in traditional medicine, concentrated extracts should not be used without proper guidance. More clinical trials are needed to determine therapeutic doses and confirm effectiveness in humans.
