RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Garcinia xanthochymus, known in some regions as asam kandis, is a lesser-known Garcinia species related to mangosteen. Traditionally used as a souring agent in Indonesian cuisine, this fruit contains xanthones, benzophenones, flavonoids, and organic acids that have attracted scientific interest.
A review published in the journal Phytochemistry reported that Garcinia species are rich sources of xanthone derivatives and other secondary metabolites with diverse biological activities. These compounds have become important targets in natural product research.
One of the key characteristics of Garcinia xanthochymus is its acidic flavor profile, which makes it useful as a natural flavoring ingredient. Beyond culinary applications, researchers have investigated its phytochemical content for potential pharmaceutical and food applications.
Studies on Garcinia species have explored antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties associated with xanthone compounds. Although many findings remain at the laboratory stage, these compounds continue to attract attention in medicinal plant research.
The food industry has also shown interest in Garcinia fruits because of their natural acids and unique flavor characteristics. Their potential as functional food ingredients continues to be investigated alongside sustainability efforts for underutilized tropical plants.
While promising, research specifically on Garcinia xanthochymus remains more limited compared to mangosteen. More clinical and safety studies are required before specific health claims can be established.
