RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Sesame (Sesamum indicum), known in Indonesia as wijen, is a small seed with significant nutritional value and a long history of use in culinary traditions. Despite its size, sesame contains valuable compounds, particularly lignans (sesamin and sesamol), vitamin E, protein, and healthy fatty acids that contribute to its nutritional benefits.
According to research published in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, sesame lignans such as sesamin and sesamol possess biological activities associated with antioxidant protection and lipid metabolism. These compounds are considered among the most important components responsible for sesame’s health potential.
One of the major benefits of sesame is its contribution to healthy dietary fats. The seeds are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, including oleic and linoleic acids, which are important components of balanced nutrition and cardiovascular health.
Sesame also provides minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus that contribute to supporting bone density. This nutritional profile has made sesame an important ingredient in functional foods and plant-based nutrition products.
In skincare research, sesame oil is valued for its moisturizing properties and vitamin E content. The oil is commonly used in massage products and cosmetic formulations because it can support skin hydration and barrier protection.
Although sesame is nutritionally beneficial, it is also a common allergen. Individuals with sesame allergies should avoid consumption, and concentrated sesame products should be used with caution based on individual health needs.
