RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Black seed (Nigella sativa), known in Indonesia as jintan hitam, is one of the most extensively studied medicinal plants in traditional medicine. The seeds contain thymoquinone, thymohydroquinone, nigellidine, fatty acids, and flavonoids that have attracted global scientific interest due to their immune-related and anti-inflammatory properties.
A review published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine reported that thymoquinone is one of the major bioactive compounds responsible for many biological effects of Nigella sativa. Research has investigated its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune-modulating activities.
One of the strongest areas of black seed research is immune system support. Experimental studies suggest that compounds in black seed may influence immune cell activity and inflammatory responses, supporting its traditional reputation as a health-promoting herb.
Black seed has also been studied for metabolic health. Clinical research has investigated its potential effects on blood sugar regulation, lipid profiles, and body weight management, although outcomes depend on formulation and individual factors.
In addition to internal use, black seed oil has gained popularity in skincare and hair care. Fatty acids and bioactive compounds in the oil are explored for their moisturizing properties and maintaining skin barrier function.
Despite promising research, black seed should not replace medical treatment. Concentrated supplements may interact with medications, particularly those affecting blood pressure, blood sugar, or blood clotting.
