RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Jasmine (Jasminum sambac), known in Indonesia as melati, is one of the country’s most culturally important flowers and a valuable source of natural fragrance compounds. Beyond its symbolic importance, jasmine contains essential oils rich in benzyl acetate, linalool, indole compounds, and flavonoids that contribute to its aromatic and biological properties.
According to research published in the journal Natural Product Communications, jasmine essential oil contains volatile compounds with antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. These compounds are responsible for its characteristic fragrance and contribute to its applications in aromatherapy and cosmetics.
One of the most recognized uses of jasmine is in aromatherapy and fragrance products. The aroma compounds of jasmine have been studied for their potential effects on relaxation, emotional balance, and mood improvement.
Jasmine extracts have also attracted interest in skincare research. Phenolic compounds and antioxidants present in jasmine may contribute to protection against oxidative stress, although more clinical studies are needed to confirm specific dermatological benefits.
The cosmetic industry has long utilized jasmine as a premium natural fragrance ingredient. Jasmine oil and extracts are commonly incorporated into perfumes, creams, and personal care products due to their distinctive aroma and consumer appeal.
Although jasmine is generally safe as a fragrance ingredient, essential oils should be used with appropriate dilution. Direct application of concentrated oils may increase the risk of irritation or allergic reactions.
