RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a fruit known worldwide for its high concentration of polyphenols and antioxidant compounds. Although not native to Indonesia, pomegranate cultivation and consumption have increased due to growing interest in functional foods, herbal products, and natural cosmetic ingredients.

According to a review published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, pomegranate contains bioactive compounds including punicalagins, anthocyanins, ellagic acid, and flavonoids. These compounds contribute to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities observed in laboratory studies.

One of the strongest characteristics of pomegranate is its antioxidant capacity. Polyphenols in the fruit can neutralize free radicals and help reduce oxidative stress, which has encouraged research into its role in supporting cellular health.

Pomegranate compounds have also been studied for their potential effects on cardiovascular and metabolic health. Experimental and clinical studies suggest that certain compounds may influence oxidative processes and inflammatory pathways associated with chronic conditions.

In the beauty industry, pomegranate extract is widely explored as a natural anti-aging ingredient. Its polyphenols and vitamin compounds are investigated for their ability to protect skin cells, maintain elasticity, and support healthier skin appearance.

Despite promising research findings, pomegranate extracts should not be considered a replacement for medical treatment. Individuals taking medications, especially those affecting blood pressure or metabolism, should consult healthcare professionals before using concentrated supplements.
