RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Noni (Morinda citrifolia), locally known as mengkudu, is a tropical medicinal plant that has been used in traditional Indonesian remedies for generations. The fruit contains iridoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and polysaccharides that have attracted scientific attention because of their antioxidant and biological activities.

According to research published in the journal Phytochemistry Reviews in 2013, Morinda citrifolia contains numerous bioactive compounds responsible for antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. The study highlighted that iridoid compounds, particularly deacetylasperulosidic acid and related compounds, contribute to many of the plant’s biological properties.

One of the major research areas involving noni is antioxidant activity. Phenolic compounds in noni fruit can help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, a process associated with cellular damage and aging. This has encouraged the development of noni-based functional beverages and supplements.

Noni has also been traditionally used to support immune function and overall body condition. Experimental studies suggest that compounds within the fruit may influence immune responses, although the strength of these effects in humans requires further investigation.

The cosmetic industry has explored noni extract as a botanical ingredient due to its antioxidant potential. Natural antioxidants from fruit extracts are increasingly used in skincare formulations designed to protect skin from environmental stressors.

Despite its popularity as a herbal product, noni consumption should consider product quality and dosage. Certain individuals, especially those with kidney problems or those taking specific medications, should consult healthcare professionals before consuming concentrated noni preparations.
