RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Javanese long pepper (Piper retrofractum) is an Indonesian medicinal spice that has been used traditionally as an ingredient in jamu and herbal preparations. Known locally as cabai jawa, this climbing plant contains bioactive compounds including piperine, piperidine derivatives, flavonoids, and essential oils that contribute to its potential pharmacological activities.

A study published in the journal Journal of Ethnopharmacology reported that Piper retrofractum contains several secondary metabolites responsible for antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities. These compounds provide scientific support for its traditional use as a warming herb and health-supporting ingredient.

One of the most studied properties of Javanese long pepper is its potential effect on digestion and metabolism. Piperine compounds found in the plant are known to stimulate digestive enzyme activity and may improve the absorption of certain bioactive compounds, similar to other plants from the Piper genus.

Traditional Indonesian medicine has used cabai jawa to support stamina and body warmth. Modern studies suggest that its alkaloid compounds may influence physiological processes related to energy metabolism, although human clinical evidence remains limited.

The essential oils and antioxidant compounds of Piper retrofractum have also attracted attention from pharmaceutical and food industries. Researchers continue to explore its potential as a natural ingredient for functional foods, herbal supplements, and botanical preparations.

Although commonly used in traditional amounts, concentrated extracts of cabai jawa should be consumed carefully. Further clinical research is still required to determine effective dosage, long-term safety, and potential interactions with medicines.
