RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) has become one of Indonesia’s most widely used aromatic plants, valued not only as a culinary spice but also as a traditional herbal ingredient. This grass-like plant contains essential oils dominated by citral, geraniol, and citronellal, compounds that contribute to its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and calming properties.
A review published in the journal Food Chemistry in 2011 reported that lemongrass essential oil contains bioactive compounds with significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The study explained that citral, the major component of lemongrass oil, plays an important role in inhibiting oxidative processes and suppressing the growth of several microorganisms.
One of the most recognized applications of lemongrass is its potential antimicrobial activity. Laboratory studies have demonstrated that lemongrass extracts and essential oils may inhibit certain bacteria and fungi, making the plant valuable for natural preservative development and traditional health applications.
Lemongrass is also widely used in aromatherapy and relaxation products. The fragrance compounds in its essential oil are associated with calming effects, and several studies have investigated its potential influence on stress reduction and mood improvement through aromatherapy applications.
Beyond aromatherapy, lemongrass has been explored for digestive and metabolic health. Traditional use in Indonesia commonly involves lemongrass tea as a beverage to support digestion and body comfort, while experimental studies suggest that its antioxidant compounds may contribute to cellular protection.
Although lemongrass is generally safe as a food ingredient and herbal beverage, concentrated essential oils require caution. Direct consumption of highly concentrated oils may cause adverse effects, and proper dilution is necessary when used for topical applications.
