RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza) is one of Indonesia’s most important traditional medicinal plants and has long been used as an ingredient in jamu formulations. This yellow rhizome contains xanthorrhizol, curcuminoids, essential oils, and other bioactive compounds that have attracted scientific interest due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties.

According to research published in the journal Phytochemistry in 2007, xanthorrhizol is one of the major active compounds in Curcuma xanthorrhiza and demonstrates strong biological activities, including antioxidant and antimicrobial effects. These findings support the traditional use of temulawak as a plant for maintaining overall health.

One of the most studied benefits of temulawak is its potential protective effect on the liver. Experimental studies have shown that curcuminoids and xanthorrhizol may help reduce oxidative stress and support liver cell protection against harmful substances. This has encouraged further research into temulawak-based hepatoprotective products.

Temulawak is also commonly associated with digestive health. Traditional Indonesian medicine uses temulawak preparations to stimulate appetite and support digestive function. Scientific studies suggest that its bitter compounds may influence bile production and gastrointestinal activity.

Beyond internal health, temulawak has potential applications in cosmetics and pharmaceutical development. The antioxidant compounds found in the rhizome are being explored for their ability to protect cells from oxidative damage, including skin cells exposed to environmental stress.

In addition to its pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications, modern agro-industrial processing is increasingly focused on the sustainable extraction of standardized curcuminoids and essential oils from temulawak. Utilizing eco-friendly extraction techniques ensures high purity and yield, bridging ancestral jamu wisdom with modern nutraceutical manufacturing standards.

Despite its long history of traditional use, temulawak extracts should still be consumed responsibly. Herbal products with concentrated active compounds may have different effects compared with culinary use, and safety considerations remain important, particularly for individuals taking medications or with existing health conditions.
