RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – August 31 marks International Overdose Awareness Day, a global observance aimed at raising awareness of the impact of overdose and the importance of prevention efforts. The observance also provides an opportunity to remember people who have lost their lives to overdose while encouraging the public to better understand its risks and how to respond to the condition.
International Overdose Awareness Day was first initiated by Sally J. Finn in 2001 and received support from members of the public, Australian government organizations, and various non-governmental organizations. Since 2012, the observance has been managed by the Penington Institute, an Australian not-for-profit public health organization that conducts research and advocacy to improve community safety related to drug and alcohol use.
This year, International Overdose Awareness Day carries the theme “25 Years On. Still Needed.”, highlighting that 25 years after the observance was first established, overdose remains an issue affecting individuals, families, and communities. Through the observance, the public is encouraged to increase awareness and understanding of overdose and the importance of prevention.
An overdose occurs when the body is exposed to a substance, such as medication, alcohol, or drugs, in an amount that exceeds the body’s ability to process it. The condition can seriously disrupt bodily functions and may become life-threatening, making overdose more appropriately understood as a medical condition or event rather than a disease.
Overdose is still surrounded by stigma in many communities, including perceptions that tend to associate it solely with criminal behavior. In fact, overdoses can occur not only as a result of illicit drug use, but also from the improper use of prescription or other medical drugs.
Prevention is an important step in reducing the risk of overdose, including following instructions from doctors or pharmacists, avoiding the use of medication prescribed to someone else, and not combining medications without consulting a healthcare professional. Medications should also be stored safely, while education about the risks of substance misuse and overdose, along with access to professional support, plays an important role in prevention.
Through International Overdose Awareness Day, the public is reminded that overdose requires greater understanding, compassion, and collective prevention efforts. Increasing knowledge and reducing stigma are expected to help create safer and more supportive environments for individuals, families, and communities affected by overdose.
