RRI.CO.ID, Surabaya - Indonesia's Surabaya City is strengthening preparedness against zoonotic diseases through cross-sector collaboration. The initiative was highlighted during a workshop in Surabaya on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

The program aims to prevent disease outbreaks by strengthening surveillance, public education, risk communication, and institutional coordination. It was organized by Surabaya's Health Office with support from Indonesia's Ministry of Health and health partners.

Head of Disease Prevention and Control at the Surabaya Health Office dr. Atiek Tri Arini said early preparedness remains the most effective way to prevent zoonotic outbreaks. She said the city continues strengthening surveillance while improving coordination with animal and environmental health sectors.

"Therefore, the Surabaya Health Office continues strengthening the surveillance system, improving coordination with the animal and environmental health sectors, and intensifying public education so people understand the risks and preventive measures from an early stage." she said.

The city is paying special attention to leptospirosis during the rainy season while maintaining vigilance against rabies-related animal bites. Residents are encouraged to practice healthy habits, use protective footwear in flooded areas, and seek medical care after potential exposure.

Program Manager of Portkesmas dr. Basra Ahmad Amru said local coordination plays an essential role in Indonesia's national strategy against zoonotic diseases. Similar preparedness programs have also been implemented in West Bandung Regency, Bogor City, Tangerang Regency, and Malang Regency.

"We must not be unprepared when a disease outbreak occurs. Cross-sector coordination at the regional level is the foundation for faster, more integrated, and more effective outbreak prevention and response." he said.

Surabaya has reported no suspected human avian influenza or anthrax cases during the past five years. The city nevertheless continues strengthening prevention efforts as leptospirosis and rabies-related animal bite cases remain under close surveillance.
