RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – A heatwave occurs when temperatures rise significantly above normal levels and persist for several consecutive days. This extreme weather has recently affected several countries, particularly across Europe, causing serious health concerns and widespread disruptions.
While heatwaves are affecting several countries, many regions are experiencing hotter weather without reaching heatwave conditions. Even in these areas, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can still pose risks to public health.
Indonesia is not currently experiencing a heatwave like several European countries, but climate change continues making local temperatures noticeably hotter. As temperatures rise, spending even a short time outdoors may leave people feeling thirsty, dizzy, weak, or experiencing heavy headaches.
Indonesia's Health Ministry warned through its official Instagram account that these symptoms may indicate the body is struggling to cope with excessive heat, especially during prolonged outdoor exposure. Ignoring these warning signs may increase the risk of dehydration, heat stress, or even life-threatening heat stroke without prompt action.
To reduce health risks, people should drink water regularly instead of waiting until they feel thirsty during hot weather. Limiting strenuous outdoor activities, especially during peak afternoon temperatures, can also help prevent unnecessary heat exposure and physical exhaustion.
Wearing lightweight, breathable clothing that absorbs sweat effectively helps keep the body cooler while improving comfort during daily outdoor activities. Using protective items such as hats or umbrellas also reduces direct sunlight exposure and lowers the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Although hot weather may seem ordinary, people should never ignore physical symptoms indicating their bodies are struggling with excessive heat. Staying hydrated, recognizing early warning signs, and taking preventive measures remain essential for maintaining good health during increasingly warmer conditions.
