RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the international medical journal "The Lancet," launched a special commission titled "The Lancet Regional Health-Western Pacific: Reimagining Healthcare in Indonesia for 2045" in Jakarta on Monday, 22 June 2026. This commission aims to redesign Indonesia's healthcare system, with the primary goal of expanding access to quality services even to remote areas.
Indonesia's Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that the commission is expected to support four strategic pillars of Indonesia's 2045 vision. These four pillars include increasing life expectancy, extending healthy life expectancy (HALE), expanding universal health insurance (UHC), and controlling the total fertility rate (TFR).
Budi called the launch of the commission a significant achievement for Indonesian healthcare. "But we would like to increase the average healthy life from 60 to 65, the fertility rate, and the third target is universal health coverage, the Surface Coverage Index," said Budi.
He added that healthy and high-quality human development is the key to sustainable economic growth to help Indonesia overcome the middle-income trap. The limited window of opportunity during the 2030–2035 demographic bonus period must be optimally utilized through evidence-based policies.
The Founding Co-Chair of the Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific Commission, Dr. Sandersan Onie, emphasized that the commission's purpose is to ensure that the reality and success of health systems in Indonesia's regions are documented and recognized globally. The Lancet has also been one of the world's most prestigious and influential medical journals since 1823. The commision is initiated and co-chaired by Indonesian experts and scientists.
The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific is an international scientific health journal focusing on public health issues, health systems, and medical research in the Western Pacific region, including Indonesia, Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, and other Pacific countries. The commission will rely on various research methods to develop a roadmap for health transformation towards the Golden Indonesia 2045.
