RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - In today's fast-paced culinary landscape, convenience often trumps nutrition. From aesthetic fast-food spots to trendy packaged snacks, the modern diet is heavily saturated with items that satisfy our cravings, but compromise our long-term health.
At the “Health Dialogue Talking About the Liver, Solid Habits, Strong Liver,” hosted by the Ministry of Health at Jakarta on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, experts are raising the alarm on how these indulgence habits are silently driving a major health crisis. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is the buildup of excess fat in the liver not caused by alcohol.
Nutritionist, Dr. Rita Ramayulis who is the speaker at the seminar, said the widespread obsession with "junk food"—dishes high in sugar, salt, and fat, yet virtually depleted of actual nutrients—is directly accelerating metabolic disorders. This dietary trend has turned liver damage into a modern lifestyle hazard, even for those who completely abstain from alcohol.
While treating ourselves to savory snacks might seem harmless, the internal reality is much more severe. Dr. Ramayulis notes that excessive simple sugars trigger immediate fat formation within the liver, while the saturated and trans fats found in highly processed foods cause a dangerous double whammy which are fat accumulation and systemic inflammation.
She explained that popular staples like flavored chips, french fries, pastries, and various ultra-processed snacks are identified as primary sources of these dangerous trans fats. For those curating a health-conscious lifestyle, understanding the impact of these ingredients is crucial, as trans fats do not merely create fat deposits in the liver, they are highly pro-inflammatory and actively triggering tissue inflammation throughout the body.
“This type of trans fat not only causes fat to accumulate in the liver, but it is also highly pro-inflammatory,” she stated.
According to the data presented by Dr. Ramayulis, 61.7% of individuals consume sugary beverages more than once a day, while 41.7% indulge in foods high in saturated fats multiple times daily. 29.7% frequently consume high-sodium foods throughout the day, cementing junk food as a primary antagonist in the modern wellness movement.
Ultimately, protecting your longevity does not require a radical elimination of all fats or sugars. Instead, experts suggest a shift toward mindful indulgence and elevated dietary curation. By becoming more discerning about the quality and quantity of the ingredients we consume, we can enjoy a vibrant culinary lifestyle while ensuring our liver health remains uncompromised.
