RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Jamu, Indonesia’s centuries-old traditional herbal medicine, is being primed for a major international breakthrough as a highly competitive global wellness and health commodity.
Through an organized push led by the Indonesian Jamu Council (DJI), the sector is working to transition these traditional herbal remedies away from isolated local markets and position them firmly within the modern global health industry. DJI serves as a unified national umbrella group that actively brings together traditional herbalists, entrepreneurs, academics, researchers, and community stakeholders to preserve and commercialize this cultural heritage.
To anchor this global expansion, DJI is currently preparing for the 2nd Jamu International Conference & Expo (JICE), which is officially scheduled to take place in October 2026. Building on the success of its inaugural event, this upcoming high-profile expo is designed as a premier international platform that seamlessly integrates scientific conferences, industrial exhibitions, and cultural diplomacy to showcase jamu to international buyers and global distributors.
"Building on the success of the first JICE event, we are committed to continuing to engage all stakeholders to develop, preserve, and promote herbal medicine globally," said DJI General Chairperson Daniel Tjen, as quoted by Antara.
"We greatly appreciate the extraordinary support from the Ministry of Creative Economy, which is willing to work hand in hand with us to make this major event a success," he added.
To ensure the industry can meet modern market demands, the development strategy focuses heavily on building a robust digital ecosystem, strengthening product branding, maximizing Intellectual Property (HKI) rights, and expanding market access through various international digital platforms.
The strategic initiative has gained full structural backing from the government following a meeting between DJI representatives and Creative Economy Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya at the ministry's headquarters in Jakarta. The ministry has committed to helping the sector navigate global trade barriers, refine its product curation, and boost international promotion.
Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya emphasized that jamu holds massive commercial value beyond its cultural sentimentality, provided it undergoes scientific and digital modernization.
"Jamu is not just a traditional heritage, but a creative economy product with great potential in the global market. Through the support of the digital ecosystem, research, and science, we must transform this cultural heritage into a modern product that is in global demand," said Teuku Riefky Harsya.
The Minister further pointed out that while the cultural foundations of Indonesian jamu are incredibly strong, the primary hurdle has always been scaling the business effectively.
"Our cultural creativity has long been extraordinary, but the biggest challenge is commercialization and monetization. Through the digital ecosystem, we support branding and curating unique products so they are ready to seize global opportunities without having to panic about meeting production capacity," the Minister explained. ***
