RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Busy activities and high mobility often cause many people to overlook their health, including common issues such as lower back pain. This condition can affect anyone, regardless of profession, as previously shared by Indonesia’s Minister of Finance, Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, who admitted to having experienced back pain.
Citing Alodokter, lower back pain generally occurs due to problems in the muscles, joints, nerves, or organs located in the lower back area. The pain can range from mild to severe and is most commonly experienced by people in the productive age group, between 30 and 50 years old.
In many cases, this condition can be managed independently at home. Simple treatments such as applying cold compresses to reduce inflammation, or warm compresses and warm baths to relax the muscles, can help relieve the pain.
In addition, gentle massage, stretching exercises, and the use of topical pain relievers or medicated patches are also common options. Over-the-counter pain medications, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, can be used according to instructions.
However, sufferers are advised to avoid heavy activities, especially lifting heavy objects, and to maintain proper posture by avoiding excessive bending to reduce pressure on the muscles and joints.
Nevertheless, not all cases of back pain should be taken lightly. When symptoms do not improve or worsen, medical treatment is necessary.
Doctors usually prescribe pain relief medications, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), to reduce inflammation and pain that interfere with daily activities.
In certain conditions, particularly those involving nerve disorders, doctors may also prescribe additional medications such as antidepressants or muscle relaxants to reduce tension in the back area. Meanwhile, physical therapy or physiotherapy is often recommended to help restore muscle and joint function, as well as improve flexibility.
In more serious cases, surgery may become the last option. This step is usually taken if back pain is accompanied by other symptoms, such as loss of bowel or bladder control, numbness, or weakness in the legs. Surgery may also be required if the pain is caused by other medical conditions, such as kidney stones or abnormalities in internal organs.
Therefore, it is important for the public to be more aware of their physical condition and not underestimate the symptoms that arise. Early treatment, whether through simple home care or medical consultation, is key to preventing lower back pain from developing into a more serious health problem.
