RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Health Ministry has officially commenced a targeted Measles-Rubella (MR) immunization campaign for frontline workers. Between April 10 and April 14, 2026, 549 medical and healthcare professionals received their first doses of the vaccine, marking the initial phase of a large-scale effort to protect those most at risk.

As reported by Antara, this initiative aims to reach a massive target of 262,299 healthcare workers across 14 priority provinces, along with 14,419 internship doctors operating in all 38 provinces.

Head of the Ministry’s Communication and Public Information Bureau, Aji Muhawarman, conveyed that 18 provinces have already successfully launched the program and begun reporting their progress.

"These regions include Bali, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Jambi, Riau, North Sumatra, Lampung, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, NTB, South Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, and Central Papua," said Aji in Jakarta on Friday, April 17, 2026.

He further clarified that while some regions are still in the preparatory stages, focusing on target data collection and inter-facility coordination, no significant obstacles have hindered the rollout thus far.

The immunization protocols are meticulously tailored to individual history. Those with two prior doses are exempt, while those with only one dose receive a booster. For those with no prior immunization, the Ministry mandates a two-dose regimen.

"If there is no prior immunization history, two doses are administered with a minimum interval of 28 days. The dose is 0.5 ml subcutaneously," explained Aji, adding that individual health facilities are responsible for managing their specific distribution strategies.

The urgency of this campaign is underscored by a sharp spike in measles cases earlier this year, which reached a peak of 2,220 cases in a single week. While the weekly trend has gradually declined to 169 cases by the 14th week, the total count for 2026 already stands at 16,912.

To curb further transmission, the Ministry is urging the public to maintain healthy lifestyles, avoid large crowds, and wear masks in high-traffic areas. For those on the front lines, the emphasis remains on strict adherence to safety protocols.

"Medical and health workers must always apply appropriate universal precautions when handling patients, using the correct personal protective equipment (PPE)," emphasized Aji.

The Ministry continues to prioritize the safety of medical personnel due to their frequent exposure to infected patients. It also reminded parents to ensure children’s vaccinations are up to date, even if they have missed their original schedules, to prevent further community spread. ***
