RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has introduced Nutri-Level, a front-of-package nutrition labeling system designed to help the public quickly assess a product’s nutritional quality amid rising cases of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
“We need a simpler, more visual, and down-to-earth approach so the public can immediately understand the risks of what they consume,” said BPOM Head Prof. Taruna Ikrar at the agency’s headquarters in Jakarta on Monday, April 6, 2026.
Nutri-Level classifies products from A to D, with color indicators ranging from dark green to red. Level A represents lower sugar, salt, and fat content, while Level D signals products that should be consumed in limited amounts.
BPOM stressed that the scheme is not a production ban but a practical guide to help consumers compare products more easily. The policy also sends a strong message to businesses that reformulating products toward healthier compositions is inevitable.
Implementation will be gradual, beginning with a voluntary scheme for ready-to-drink beverages. The agency is providing an adaptation period to ensure the transition is proportionate and sustainable.
“This is not merely a regulation, but a collective movement to help the public choose healthier options,” Taruna said.
BPOM positions Nutri-Level as part of a broader effort to build a healthy food ecosystem through collaboration among government, industry, academia, and the media. Cross-sectoral cooperation is considered vital to improving nutrition literacy and reducing the prevalence of non-communicable diseases, particularly among the working-age population.
Taruna emphasized that the rise of non-communicable diseases must be countered with greater awareness of food consumption. “Nutri-Level is not just a label on packaging, but a manifestation of the government’s commitment to the people’s right to a healthier life,” he said.
