RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The World Autism Awareness Day is commemorated every April 2. It was established by the United Nations (UN) as a moment to raise global awareness.

The commemoration also aims at encouraging acceptance and inclusion for individuals with autism in all aspects of life. Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates and interacts socially.

The autism spectrum is highly diverse, meaning each individual has unique needs and potentials. Public awareness of autism continues to grow, yet stigma and misunderstandings still persist.

Many individuals with autism continue to face discrimination, both in educational settings and in everyday social life.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), autism affects millions of people worldwide with varying levels of support needs. This highlights the importance of inclusive systems that enable every individual to thrive.

In Indonesia, efforts to create an inclusive environment are ongoing through inclusive education and various support programs. However, challenges such as limited access to services and a lack of public understanding remain significant barriers.

The observance of World Autism Awareness Day serves as an opportunity to strengthen collaboration among governments, communities, and society at large. Continuous education is considered essential to eliminate stigma and foster empathy toward individuals with autism.

Through this momentum, society is encouraged not only to raise awareness but also to take real action. Simple acts of support, acceptance, and equal opportunities can become meaningful steps toward a more inclusive world.
