RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The term “post-holiday blues” often emerges after holidays end, referring to feelings of sadness or loss of motivation when returning to daily routines.

This phenomenon is common, particularly after Eid al-Fitr or the mass exodus to hometowns for family gatherings. Separation from family and the end of the festive atmosphere are among the main triggers.

Many people experience emotional changes, such as feelings of emptiness, a sense of loss, and declining work motivation, due to emotional ties to their hometown. In psychology, this condition is known as “post-holiday blues,” which usually arises from the abrupt shift from holiday settings to daily life.

According to the University of Indonesia’s Psychology Department, psychologist Dian Wisnuwardhani explained that symptoms include sadness, fatigue, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating upon returning to work.

“The impact is definitely discomfort, and there may be symptoms or conditions that make someone reluctant to go to the office or delay their work,” Dian said in a statement on March 22, 2026.

Returning to a busy work routine can also trigger lethargy and loss of motivation. The contrast between holiday and regular activities creates an “emotional gap” that individuals may feel.

From a mental health perspective, this condition is generally not dangerous and usually subsides within a few days. However, if it persists, it should be treated with caution as it may develop into a psychological disorder.

Experts recommend resuming activities gradually after the Eid holiday. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and staying connected with loved ones can help restore one’s mood. (Gusti Panji/Lasti Martina)
