RRakarta – World Sleep Day is observed each year on the Friday before the Spring Vernal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. In 2026, the observance falls on March 13 and aims to raise public awareness about the importance of getting sufficient and quality sleep.

According to the global sleep health organization World Sleep Society, good sleep quality is one of the key pillars of maintaining overall health. However, various studies show that many people still do not get enough sleep each day.

Based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one-third of adults do not get sufficient sleep every night. This condition has become a significant public health concern in many countries.

Lack of sleep can trigger various health problems, ranging from decreased concentration to an increased risk of chronic diseases. In the long term, this condition can also affect productivity and overall quality of life.

Common sleep disorders experienced by many people include Insomnia, which refers to difficulty sleeping, and Sleep Apnea, a condition characterized by breathing interruptions during sleep. These disorders are often unnoticed, causing many individuals to continue their daily activities despite poor sleep quality.

A journal published in 2015 titled Recommended Amount of Sleep for a Healthy Adult: A Joint Consensus Statement of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society states that adults are recommended to sleep seven hours or more each night. In addition to sleep duration, maintaining a regular sleep schedule is also key to achieving good sleep quality.

Through the observance of World Sleep Day, the public is expected to become more aware of the importance of maintaining healthy sleep habits. With adequate and quality sleep, the body can function optimally and support overall health.
