RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) is a spice native to Indonesia that has long been used as a flavoring ingredient in food and beverages due to its distinctive taste. Besides being a kitchen spice, cloves are also known to provide various health benefits thanks to the active compounds, vitamins, and minerals they contain.

The dried flower buds from the Myrtaceae family contain antioxidants that help fight free radicals. The main compound in cloves, eugenol, is known to play an important role in combating oxidative stress associated with various chronic diseases.

Several studies recorded in the National Library of Medicine show that eugenol has strong antioxidant properties and is even considered more effective in dealing with oxidative stress than vitamin E.

In addition, some laboratory studies have found that eugenol may help inhibit tumor growth and trigger the death of cancer cells. However, researchers emphasized that these findings still require further studies because the tests were conducted using highly concentrated extracts.

Cloves are also believed to help maintain liver health. The active compounds in cloves are thought to improve liver function, reduce inflammation, and lower oxidative stress that can trigger conditions such as fatty liver disease.

Moreover, the compound nigericin in cloves is considered to have the potential to help regulate blood sugar levels. The substance can improve sugar absorption in cells and support insulin function, especially when combined with a healthy and balanced diet.

In the digestive system, clove extract is known to help relieve stomach disorders such as gastritis and peptic ulcers. Its active compounds can increase mucus production in the stomach, which acts as a protective barrier for the stomach lining against acid irritation.

Additionally, the essential oil in cloves may help improve digestion, reduce bloating, and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the digestive tract.

Cloves are also beneficial for maintaining oral and dental health. A study published in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology states that cloves can be used as a natural alternative mouthwash to help reduce plaque that causes tartar.

The eugenol compound in cloves also has antibacterial properties that can fight bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and help reduce inflammation around the gums and teeth.

With these various active compounds, cloves are not only a culinary spice but also have the potential to become a natural ingredient that supports overall health. However, experts still recommend consuming them in moderation and combining them with a healthy lifestyle.
