RRI.CO.ID, Bogor - Sweet snacks with vibrant and colourful creams captivate children and go viral. Their appealing look and sugary taste often make them viral across social media platforms.

Behind the attractive visuals, concerns arise regarding harmful ingredients, excessive sugar, and artificial colouring. These components potentially pose risks to children’s health when consumed frequently and without proper supervision.

Public health physician, Yusuf Ryadi from IPB University warned about routine consumption risks. He emphasized high sugar and colouring intake can impair children’s growth and development.

“Excessive sugar intake increases obesity risk, cavities, metabolic disorders, and may trigger behavioural problems.” he said, as quoted by IPB University website on Monday, January 26, 2026.

Although food-grade colourings are permitted, excessive long-term intake still poses health risks. This concern is greater because children’s metabolic systems remain in a developmental stage.

Viral brightly coloured snacks also contribute indirectly to rising childhood nutrition problems. Such foods are typically high in calories and sugar but low in fibre.

Early habitual sugar consumption can shape long-term eating patterns and taste preferences. Children accustomed to sweetness may struggle accepting healthier foods later in life.

Regulations exist, yet monitoring homemade and online viral snacks remains challenging nationwide. He urged stronger supervision, clearer labelling, and broader education for parents and schools.
