RRI.CO.ID. Moscow - After Baku, Azerbaijan, UI GreenMetric has reinforced its commitment to promoting sustainable campus development in Russia through the 10th National Workshop on UI GreenMetric “Green Universities of Russia” held at RUDN University, Moscow, on September 30, 2026.

Initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010, the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings is a global initiative that encourages universities worldwide to measure, evaluate, and improve their campus sustainability performance through data-driven approaches, knowledge exchange, and international collaboration. The organization has now grown into the world's largest network for sustainable campuses.

The 10th national workshop in Russia marks a decade-long journey of UI GreenMetric with Russian universities in building awareness, sharing knowledge, and strengthening sustainability practices in higher education. During this period, 51 Russian universities have become active members of the global sustainability initiative. “Ten National Workshops represent something important. These ten workshops show continuity, trust, and joint commitment to sustainability in the Russian higher education environment,” Chairman of UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., MIA. said.

The workshop brought together university representatives, academicians, government sustainability managers, researchers, and related stakeholders to discuss the development of UI GreenMetric 2026 and the sustainability agenda for universities in Russia.

The agenda included updates on the 2026 indicators and data submission process, developments of the Russian National UI GreenMetric Network, and university experiences in managing seven sustainability areas: infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, education and research, as well as governance and digitalization. The discussion also covered international cooperation opportunities, including the development of ecological and climate testing site networks and solutions for urban climate and environmental protection.

Dr. Vishnu emphasized that UI GreenMetric should not be understood merely as a ranking. Sustainability measurement must help universities understand challenges and drive real change. “The purpose of measuring energy is not just to gain points, but to understand energy. The purpose of measuring waste is not just documentation, but to change consumption patterns. The purpose of measuring transportation is not just to fulfill an indicator, but to rethink mobility that is inclusive, environmentally friendly, and sustainable,” Dr. Vishnu said.

Building the Future through Higher Education, Dr. Vishnu also highlighted the enormous potential of Russian higher education to drive change. Based on Rosstat data cited in his speech, around 4.43 million students participated in bachelor's, specialist, and master's programs in Russia in the 2024/2025 academic year. According to him, this scale is not just a statistical number, but millions of opportunities to create change.

Universities have the capacity to turn campus issues into sources of knowledge: energy consumption can become a dataset, waste can become a circular economy experiment, and transportation patterns can become a mobility study.

UI GreenMetric continues to expand its commitment to encouraging and developing sustainability practices, not only at the national level in Indonesia, but also in various parts of the world, including Russia, through data-based measurement, knowledge exchange, global networks, and inter-campus collaboration. Initiated in 2010, UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings is the world's first university ranking dedicated to sustainable campuses, and through evidence-based assessment of environmental commitments and actions, it has become a living laboratory for better decision-making.
