Thousands of Undocumented Birds Seized at Bakauheni Port in Lampung

RRI.CO.ID, South Lampung - Joint officers secured thousands of birds of various species being transported without valid quarantine documents in the Seaport Interdiction area of Bakauheni Port, South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province. The birds were found in several baskets and cardboard boxes stored in the luggage compartment of an intercity Sinar Jaya bus on Saturday night, September 26, 2026.
The bus was traveling from Palembang to Kampung Rambutan, Jakarta. Head of the Bakauheni Port Sector Police (KSKP), Adj. Sr. Police Commissioner Fransiskus Yepta Terang Ginting, said the bus was inspected around 8:30 p.m. Jakarta time by joint officers.
“Officers found 2,775 birds of various species being transported without valid quarantine documents. Subsequently, we secured the birds for further examination and handling in coordination with relevant agencies,” said Fransiskus in a statement on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
The operation began with a joint inspection involving police, quarantine officials, the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), and wildlife conservation organizations. During the inspection, officers discovered several baskets and cardboard boxes containing birds in the bus’s luggage compartment.
Fransiskus said the secured birds consisted of 19 species, including white-eyes, buff-backed mynas, Javan prinias, ash-colored prinias, and ash-colored shrikes. The remainder comprised weavers, bulbuls, white-eyes, flowerpeckers, and drongos.
White-eyes were the most numerous, totaling 950 individuals. They were followed by 480 buff-backed mynas, 360 Javan prinias, 283 ash-colored prinias, and 177 ash-colored shrikes.
Officers also detained two individuals inside the vehicle for questioning. In addition, the bus used to transport the birds and two mobile phones were secured for case handling purposes.
According to Fransiskus, transporting wildlife without official documents may violate Law Number 21/2019 on Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine. Regarding the alleged violation, officers referred to provisions under Article 88 letters a and c of the same law.
After initial inspection, all birds were handed over to quarantine authorities through coordination with the Bakauheni Quarantine Center and BKSDA for further health examination and handling.
Officers are also continuing to increase surveillance in the port area to prevent the transport of wildlife without documents and to ensure that all animals passing through comply with applicable regulations. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
