Govt Urges Mining Industry to Boost Decarbonization Efforts

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has urged the mining industry to strengthen decarbonization efforts and increase its responsibility for environmental protection as part of the country’s commitment to sustainable development.

Vice Minister of Environment and Deputy Head of the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH), Diaz Hendropriyono, made the statement at the RESOURCES ID Annual Business Meeting 2026 in Jakarta on Monday, September 21, 2026. The meeting carried the theme “Beyond Boundaries, Toward Global Excellence: Advancing Sustainable Mining Services Through Innovation and Collaboration.”

“Large profits must be accompanied by greater responsibility. This means greater environmental responsibility, and we need to pursue decarbonization efforts,” Diaz said.

He said environmental protection is one of the government’s priorities. KLH/BPLH also recognizes companies through the Corporate Performance Rating Program in Environmental Management (PROPER) for their efforts in environmental management and protection.

Diaz also encouraged industries to calculate and report their emission reductions to KLH/BPLH, particularly through SIGN-SMART, Indonesia’s greenhouse gas inventory system.

According to him, decarbonization is part of Indonesia’s national development mandate and is in line with the 1945 Constitution and President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita priorities for development that is aligned with environmental sustainability.

“The state must be present because decarbonization is a mandate. Article 33, Paragraph 4 of the Constitution stipulates that development must be environmentally conscious, while Asta Cita No. 8 calls for harmony between human life, the environment, and nature. This means decarbonization must take place across all sectors,” he said.

Diaz added that Presidential Regulation No. 110 also provides an incentive scheme for industries that reduce their emissions. Emission reporting through SIGN-SMART is expected to help KLH/BPLH monitor emission reductions while supporting the implementation of an emissions trading system.
