RRI.CO.ID, Singkawang - A mother pangolin and her two offspring were found dead in a fire-ravaged area in Pangmilang village, South Singkawang Subdistrict, West Kalimantan, after failing to escape a localized bushfire.
A joint response team discovered the charred remains of the critically endangered mammals on Thursday, September 17, while conducting sweeping and cooling-down operations along the border area between Sedau and Pangmilang.
"The three animals were found by the joint team while conducting sweeping and cooling operations at the fire site today," said Pangmilang Village Head Frans Halidius on Thursday, September 17, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Frans said that the three animals, one adult female and two young pangolins, were found close to each other. Officials suspect the animals succumbed to intense heat and dense smoke as the fire swept through their habitat.
The joint firefighting crew involved in the containment and cooling process comprised personnel from the Pangmilang Village administration, the Local Military Command (Koramil), the Fire-Aware Community (MPA), local fire brigades, and the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP).
Following the discovery, local authorities plan to coordinate with the West Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) to handle the animal remains and assess the ecological impact on the surrounding area. "We plan to report this discovery to BKSDA for further handling," Frans said. ***
