RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Authorities in the Seribu Islands Regency have vaccinated and sterilized over a hundred cats across Kelapa Island and Kelapa Dua Island in North Seribu Islands to guard against rabies and control the local feline population.
The initiative was spearheaded by the Seribu Islands Food Security, Marine, and Agriculture Subagency (Sudin KPKP) in collaboration with animal welfare group Let’s Adopt Indonesia.
"Today we conducted sterilization and vaccination for 111 cats," said Acting Head of the Animal Husbandry and Health Section Sandri Oktama at the Seribu Islands Sudin KPKP, on Thursday, September 17, as quoted by Antara.
The outreach covered both stray and domestic cats, consisting of 60 females and 51 males. For feral felines, officers implemented the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) method, capturing the animals to sterilize and vaccinate them before releasing them back into their original habitats. Domestic pets were registered by their owners prior to receiving treatment.
"Sterilization is an effort to manage cat population growth in a measured way, which we hope will curb the rise of stray cats while improving animal health and welfare," Sandri explained.
Kelapa Island Village Head Muhammad Adriansyah voiced strong support for the program, noting that health interventions help create a safer, more comfortable living environment for local islanders.
"We support this activity and encourage the community to take shared responsibility in caring for both pets and neighborhood cats in our surrounding environment," Adriansyah said. ***
