Govt Promotes Green Jobs through RAC Skills

RRI.CO.ID, Bekasi - The Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency are promoting the development of green jobs by strengthening the skills of workers in the refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) sector. The initiative was part of the 2026 World Ozone Day commemoration held in Bekasi, West Java, on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Minister of Manpower, Yassierli said the transition to a green economy must be accompanied by a workforce equipped with skills that meet technological developments and industry needs.“We are using this World Ozone Day momentum to accelerate workforce readiness for the green transition. One of the key areas at the forefront of this effort is the work of air-conditioning operators and repair technicians, as well as technicians for cooling equipment,” Yassierli said.

According to Yassierli, RAC technicians need adequate skills to keep up with technological developments while also understanding environmental considerations in carrying out their work. Therefore, the Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency continue to develop relevant competency standards and training materials.

“This includes knowing how to select and operate the equipment, as well as ensuring that substances that are harmful to the environment are no longer used. This is part of Indonesia’s global commitment to reducing damage to the ozone layer,” he said.

Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency Jumhur Hidayat said strengthening technicians’ skills is necessary to ensure that cooling technologies are used safely and in line with the development of more environmentally friendly technologies.

“As the technology has advanced, retraining is necessary. The Ministry of Manpower provides the facilities for workforce training, while we provide the equipment,” Jumhur explained.

The collaboration between the Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency to develop workforce capacity in the RAC sector has been ongoing since 2017. The cooperation includes updating the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards (SKKNI), developing training curricula and schemes, and strengthening workforce competencies.

During the event, the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency also symbolically handed over 99 RAC training equipment units to the Ministry of Manpower. The equipment will be used to support training programs at 14 vocational training centers (BBPVP/BPVP) across Indonesia, from Aceh to Sorong.
