Japanese Vessel JS Kunisaki Supports Indonesia Fire Response

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Japanese vessel JS Kunisaki arrived in West Kalimantan to support Indonesia's forest and land fire response. It docked at Kijing Port, Mempawah, on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
Acting Head of the BNPB Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Berton SP Panjaitan confirmed the vessel's arrival. The Japanese mission will support Indonesian firefighting teams through aerial water bombing operations.
“The Japanese vessel, JS Kunisaki, and its personnel arrived at Kijing Port, Mempawah, West Kalimantan, on Thursday, September 10, 2026,” he said.
The vessel carries three heavy-lift Chinook helicopters and around 180 to 300 Japanese personnel. The helicopters will support firefighting operations in areas identified as priorities by Indonesian authorities.
The helicopters will first undergo flight tests before beginning aerial firefighting operations. The operation is planned to start on September 11 or 12, following preparations and coordination.
Berton explained that the operation requires one to two days for discussions and preparations. The teams will determine priority areas before executing water bombing operations.
“The firefighting operation will be conducted from the air using water bombing. It is planned to begin on September 11 or 12, depending on the situation after the flight tests. There will be one to two days for discussions and preparations before executing operations in several priority areas. Their assistance is scheduled to last for 21 days to support all firefighting teams working in the field,” Berton said.
Japan's assistance is scheduled to continue for 21 days during the firefighting mission. The support is expected to strengthen the Indonesian teams responding to forest and land fires in the field.
