RRI.CO.ID, Samarinda - The East Kalimantan Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Agency (DPKH Kaltim) is advancing specialized breeding techniques to conserve the population of the Sambar deer (Rusa unicolor), a protected endemic species in the region.
The breeding and conservation initiative is centered at the Api‑Api Regional Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) in Penajam Paser Utara Regency.
Technical upgrades include improved high‑nutrient forage management, hygienic enclosure protocols, routine veterinary monitoring, and a digital medical recording system designed to track lineage and prevent inbreeding depression.
Alongside population management, the Api‑Api center, which houses hundreds of Sambar deer, is being developed into an eco‑tourism and educational destination.
Local authorities have partnered with conservation agencies and universities to conduct breeding research, develop alternative feed formulas, and provide interactive educational programs for students and tourists.
Regional officials said modern breeding technology and cross‑sectoral research partnerships are essential to securing long‑term biodiversity balance across Benua Etam.
Head of DPKH Kaltim, Arief Murdiyatno, detailed the technical improvements and conservation outcomes achieved at the facility.
“We are applying these breeding technology developments at UPTD Api‑Api Penajam Paser Utara to optimize reproduction rates and maintain the genetic quality of the Sambar deer. Innovations in high‑nutrition feed management and integrated health monitoring have significantly increased the deer birth rate,” Arief said in Samarinda on Thursday, July 30, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Arief emphasized the dual role of the breeding facility as both a conservation backup and an educational resource.
“The Api‑Api breeding center in Penajam Paser Utara, with its population of hundreds of Sambar deer, is not only focused on genetic preservation, but is also being developed as an environmental education tourism destination for the public.
