RRI.CO.ID Jakarta: The Indonesian National Police, or POLRI, is taking swift action to follow the President’s directive. On 28 July 2026, the President gave directions about El Nino, extreme weather, and forest and land fires. On 30 July, the Deputy Chief of Police, Police Commissioner General Prof. Dr. Dedi Prasetyo, and the Deputy Minister of Forestry, Rohmat Marzuki, held a national meeting in Jakarta. The meeting was also joined by police chiefs from fire-prone areas online. Other agencies also attended, including the Ministry of Forestry, Ministry of Environment, BMKG, BNPB, and Basarnas. The goal is to work together to face the dry season from July to September 2026.

To follow the President’s directive, POLRI is focusing on prevention first. All police units must update maps of fire-prone areas. They must monitor hotspots in the field. They must also improve early warning systems. Joint patrols will be done with the Military, Manggala Agni, local government, and the public. Bhabinkamtibmas and Babinsa officers will also go to villages. They will check water, drought risk, farms, and if people need help because of El Nino.

On the ground, POLRI has already taken action. There have been 151 readiness roll calls and 29 alert assemblies. There were 180 field preparation activities and 2,850 public education events. More than 168,500 patrols on land and water have been done. POLRI also uses command centers to watch hotspots in real time. Drones and CCTV help to find fires early. This way, fires can be stopped before they become big.

POLRI is also preparing its personnel and equipment. There are 48,368 Sabhara personnel and 23,360 Brimob personnel ready to help. POLRI uses a "rayonization" system so help can move fast between regions. All officers must have proper gear like fireproof clothes, masks, and firefighting tools. Safety comes first. Police are also checking dams, reservoirs, and wells to use as water sources during fires.

Technology is playing a pivotal role. POLRI has command centers in Riau, Jambi, West Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan. These centres are linked to other ministries. Drones made in Indonesia are used to find and map fire points quickly. POLRI also has four helicopters that can conduct water bombing operations. These will be used in areas with high fire risk.

For law enforcement, POLRI is watching land burning closely. Until June 2026, there were 118 investigations and 30 cases. A total of 115 suspects have been processed. The law targets not only people who burn land, but also those who order it or profit from it, including companies. The data shows 107,465 hectares of land have been affected. The top five hotspot areas are West Kalimantan, Riau, South Papua, Aceh, and South Sulawesi.

The Head of Public Information, Police Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir, said this meeting shows POLRI’s fast action. He stated that, “The President’s direction is our guide. We will prevent fires through patrols, early detection, ready personnel, technology, and inter-agency coordination. Our goal is to protect people and reduce the impact of El Nino. We hope this teamwork will keep people safe, protect nature, and keep our food supply strong. With good prevention, we believe forest and land fires can be controlled".
