RRI.CO.ID, Ternate - Indonesia is advancing geothermal energy development in North Maluku through the Telaga Rano Geothermal Working Area. The initiative was discussed during a geothermal development forum in Ternate on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

The project is expected to support renewable energy expansion while strengthening regional electricity supply. The North Maluku Provincial Government also emphasized environmental protection and local community involvement.

Deputy Governor of North Maluku H. Sarbin Sehe, said natural resources should bring benefits for local communities. He encouraged investors to create inclusive partnerships while maintaining environmental sustainability.

"The people of North Maluku are humane and peace-loving. Do not let them feel like strangers in their own land. Invite and involve them, and provide opportunities for local people to become part of the future of this investment." he said.

The discussion was held through a Focus Group Discussion and geothermal development socialization event organized in Ternate. The event involved the provincial government, Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, investors, and related stakeholders.

Director of Geothermal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr. Priatin Hadi Wijaya said geothermal energy can provide continuous electricity without interruption. He said the development supports Indonesia's commitment to achieving energy independence and expanding renewable energy capacity.

"Geothermal is an extraordinary energy provider because it can produce 24 hours a day without intervention. PT Talaga Rano Geothermal has shown extraordinary commitment through its very rapid development process." he said.

The Telaga Rano geothermal project, located in West Halmahera, has secured a geothermal permit since June 11, 2026. The project has potential electricity capacity of around 40 megawatts to support the regional power system.

Indonesia aims to become the world's largest geothermal producer by 2030. The government is implementing several strategies, including exploration, development expansion, and online geothermal working area auctions.
