RRI.CO.ID, Banyuwangi - A wildlife smuggling attempt using public transport was foiled at Bali’s exit point. Officials seized about 200 undocumented wild birds hidden on a mansion bus bound for Wonogiri, Central Java, while it was docked at Ketapang Port, Banyuwangi, East Java.
Head of the Ketapang quarantine station, Fitri Hidayati, said the birds were discovered during routine inspections at Ketapang Port.
“Together with related agencies we found around 200 wild birds on the Mansion bus without quarantine documents from their area of origin. All birds were secured for processing in accordance with laws and regulations,” she said in a written statement in Banyuwangi on Sunday, 19 July 2026.
Fitri did not specify when the discovery occurred. She explained that inter-island transport of wild birds must be accompanied by a quarantine health certificate and a Domestic Plant and Animal Transport Permit (SATS-DN) issued by the Ministry of Forestry.
As reported by Antara, traffic in undocumented wild birds risks spreading zoonotic diseases, harming livestock, damaging ecosystems and threatening species conservation.
The Ketapang quarantine team uncovered the case in cooperation with the Indonesian Navy, Army Military Police (Pomad), the Port Police Sector (KSKP) Tanjungwangi, and local community members.
All birds underwent health checks and species identification before being handed over to the East Java Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) for release in the Kawah Ijen Nature Reserve. ***
