RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s long-discussed forestry carbon trading has finally moved from concept to reality, with the Ministry of Forestry issuing permits to four forest utilization holders to begin transactions.
Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said the initiative is designed to strengthen forest protection while improving the welfare of communities living around forest areas.
The permits cover three concession holders and one social forestry scheme, marking the first concrete step in implementing carbon trading. Minister Raja Juli said the ministry will continue expanding the program so its benefits reach both businesses and local forest managers.
“This policy is expected to reinforce forest protection while enhancing community welfare,” he said, adding that 8.3 million hectares of social forestry and 1.4 million hectares of customary forests will be empowered to participate.
He noted that the acceleration of carbon trading implementation has been possible thanks to the support of President Prabowo Subianto. “We extend our appreciation to President Prabowo, who once again has turned what seemed impossible into something achievable,” he said.
The government has also launched the Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK), making the Forestry Ministry the first to implement carbon trading. This follows the July 6 issuance of ministerial approval for carbon units under the Non-Certificate Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction (Non SPE-GRK) scheme.
“This step is part of the government’s drive to accelerate the green economy under President Prabowo’s leadership,” the minister concluded. ***
