RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Residents woke to hazardous skies as Jakarta recorded the world’s worst air quality on Wednesday morning, June 24, 2026. This dangerous spike prompted renewed warnings for people to avoid outdoor activity and wear masks when outside.
IQAir monitoring data at 6 a.m. Jakarta time on June 24, 2026 placed the city’s air quality index (AQI) at 183, with particulate matter (PM) 2.5 concentrations near 100 micrograms per cubic meter, a level classified as unhealthy. Citizens were urged to limit time outdoors and to wear masks if they must go outside.
As reported by Antara, Jakarta ranked first globally in poor air quality that morning, followed by Doha, Qatar (AQI 176); Lahore, Pakistan (AQI 171); and Manama, Bahrain (AQI 162).
The Jakarta Provincial Administration outlined three main strategies to improve air quality. First, officials plan to expand Transjabodetabek bus services to reduce private vehicle use, adding routes such as Blok M–Alam Sutera, Blok M–PIK 2, and Blok M–Soekarno-Hatta Airport.
Second, the province is targeting a fleet of 10,000 electric Transjakarta buses by 2030, addressing transport’s contribution of roughly 50 percent of the city’s emissions.
Jakarta Province Governor, Pramono Anung, urged residents to take advantage of available public transport services. The third strategy focuses on optimizing the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) waste-processing facility in Rorotan, North Jakarta.
