RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Lembah Hijau Zoo in Lampung has recorded another conservation success with the birth of a female Sumatran elephant calf on June 5, 2026. The birth brings hope for the survival of this endangered species, whose population continues to face pressure in the wild.
The 123‑kilogram calf is the second offspring of elephant pair Aris (29) and Mega (27), following the birth of a male calf named Rawana in August 2022. The newborn is in good health and under close supervision by medical staff and mahouts.
Lembah Hijau Zoo Chief Commissioner Irwan Nasution said the birth reflects the success of the zoo’s sustainable Sumatran elephant conservation and breeding program.
“The birth of this calf is concrete evidence of our commitment to supporting Sumatran elephant conservation,” Irwan said on Wednesday, June 10.
As a gesture of appreciation, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni named the calf Rut.
“We named this calf Rut as a symbol of friendship and appreciation to the Norwegian Government, especially Ambassador Rut Krüger Giverin, who has shown strong commitment and made significant contributions to forest and environmental conservation in Indonesia. We hope this calf will grow healthy and become a symbol of hope for the sustainability of the Sumatran elephant population,” Raja Juli said, as quoted on the ministry’s official website.
The minister emphasized that the successful birth demonstrates the important role of ex situ conservation programs in supporting endangered species. He encouraged conservation institutions to strengthen wildlife management, animal welfare, and sustainable breeding programs.
Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) Satyawan Pudyatmoko said the birth highlights the success of the breeding program.
“Despite the challenges faced by Sumatran elephants due to habitat loss and management practices not fully aligned with animal welfare principles, the successful breeding at Lembah Hijau Zoo shows the impact of conservation institutions in safeguarding endangered species,” Satyawan said.
Rut’s birth marks a significant milestone for Lembah Hijau Zoo and raises hope for efforts to increase the population of Sumatran elephants, a protected species threatened by habitat loss and human conflict in the wild. ***
